Newborn twins in studio

Beautiful twins came to my studio back in late January. This was the second time around for newborn photos for this Mom and I am very happy she asked me again to take her babies portraits. We had to cancel the original session because of snow. The booking was rescheduled on another day that also ushered in another load of snow. Fortunately we decided to plan an earlier date before the bad weather was forecast. Good call! If we hadn’t done that the date would have been pushed out beyond the best time period for newborn portraits and it would have been difficult to settle the babies. Everything worked out great and we got some delightful portraits!

Newborn at home (in Littleton!)

This session was unusual in a number of ways and made a pleasant change of routine. In these days of the internet and Google searches I find that most of my clients aren’t from my immediate surrounding towns. I get many clients from Boston and from towns throughout Massachusetts, and some from even further afield! These clients usually travel to my studio in West Concord above Nashoba Bakery or to one of the local parks I recommend. This family however was from my hometown in Littleton, which gave me the rare opportunity to do a newborn shoot indoors at their house.
Doing a portrait session in a house can be quite a tricky prospect, often the light is low and there is not much room to maneuver. The art of the photographer in these cases is too find the right combination of good light and uncluttered backgrounds that do not distract from the subject. In this case to add some variety a handheld flash was also used for some of the images to subtly add some extra light by ‘bouncing’ it off the walls of the room rather than pointed directly at the family to avoid any harsh shadows. This couple and their newborn made for perfect subjects, even the dog jumped in for a few shots. So it ended up being a great session and to top it all it was just a two minute drive around the corner back home again!

This was an early spring session in the studio, this family visited with a delightful two week old newborn. We managed to get some nice interaction shots whilst baby was awake and then some serene sleeping shots after a little feed. For a change the images showcased in this blog entry are a couple of the prints ordered from the session, as a typical example of what the finished portraits look like. Shown here is a 20×10″ storyboard which is one of the studio’s most popular products. It works well with newborn portraits where face, full body, and a details shot can all be combined into a single image. The other image is a very popular 14×11″ digital matte, here the actual inside image is 11×8″ with a white border. It is hard backed with a special coating which means it can be mounted directly in a frame with no protective glass required – no more annoying reflections detracting from the portrait! One of the most satisfying parts of portrait photography is knowing these lovely images will be hanging on a wall provoking memories for years to come.

Brothers in the studio

I’d taken portraits of this young boy previously as a newborn, now he brought in his new baby brother. It’s always special to capture those very first interactions between new siblings, and we also had some lovely timeless images of baby alone and mother and baby – a great session!

Sound Asleep

When this lovely newborn girl came to visit for her newborn portraits she slept quite peacefully for almost the entire session. There was one brief moment when she opened one eye! I always love working on a few mother baby moments as part of the shoot. Some Moms do not feel they are completely got together so soon after giving birth but its never about having to look straight into the camera lens and pose it’s about spending some quite minutes up close with your precious bundle. I think some of my favorite portraits of from these set ups.

Newborn session to share

I am playing catch up with a few of my sessions held later in 2012. Now were are well into the new year I just want to send belated new years greetings to my good clients and all following the blog. I wish you a wonderful 2013.

Here’s two of my favorite images from a newborn session in studio. The sister also came to visit for a few portraits along with Mom and Dad.  We had a few fleeting moments in front of the camera which is very normal with toddlers. I mean, why be in front of the camera when there’s better things to do!  I think the sibling portrait has a really lovely feel to it.
