A Year On

It was great to meet up with this family again, a year after taking the newborn and family portraits. I am just rounding of my work on their order so I thought it a good time to blog. The one year old daughter was a little more busy this time around and as the session finished I suggested we try some final shots of her with the dog. There was a chance it may not work. Why would the dog want to stay still with all that park to run around in and why would a toddler want to take a break from exploring? It all came together nicely as you can see in the final portrait.

Portraits over the years

It is always a great pleasure and honor to be able to take portraits of my returning clients and to see how the children have grown over the intervening years. These two lovely girls are a case in point, I first photographed them back in 2008 and I delved into the archives of my blog to find their portraits from that session to see how much they’ve changed (see the last two photos below). This time we did an indoor studio session and the family dog made an appearance too. As much as they’ve grown one thing hadn’t changed – these sisters are still the most delightful subjects to photograph!

There seem to have been quite a few dogs present on recent sessions and this is one of the nicest ones, he was such a pleasant mild-mannered chap! Of course the little boy loves him and gave him plenty of robust hugs, which he accepted most patiently. I thought these images turned out well, the color of the dog was well matched to the autumnal tones of the fields. We did this session in some preservation land in the Lincoln/Concord area, one I have not used too many times before but I really liked because of the nice grasses that make for lovely portrait backdrops. There were also some plants that had dandelion type seeds, something no typical young boy would be able to resist tossing in the air!

Remember November

At the start of the summer I posted this delightful image of a toddler and his best furry friend and promised some more of this session from last fall, well here they are. We seem to be on a roll with dogs being featured on the blog and here’s another one… this was another well behaved dog – I wonder where all the naughty ones are, I never seem to get them! This session was done last November which can be a great month for fall color and late afternoon golden sunshine and when I tend to have some more openings if you’re trying to schedule a session. In fact there is often more “fall color” in this month than the preceding ones, as the color is on the floor where I can include it in photos rather than up high in the trees!

Newborn at home (in Littleton!)

This session was unusual in a number of ways and made a pleasant change of routine. In these days of the internet and Google searches I find that most of my clients aren’t from my immediate surrounding towns. I get many clients from Boston and from towns throughout Massachusetts, and some from even further afield! These clients usually travel to my studio in West Concord above Nashoba Bakery or to one of the local parks I recommend. This family however was from my hometown in Littleton, which gave me the rare opportunity to do a newborn shoot indoors at their house.
Doing a portrait session in a house can be quite a tricky prospect, often the light is low and there is not much room to maneuver. The art of the photographer in these cases is too find the right combination of good light and uncluttered backgrounds that do not distract from the subject. In this case to add some variety a handheld flash was also used for some of the images to subtly add some extra light by ‘bouncing’ it off the walls of the room rather than pointed directly at the family to avoid any harsh shadows. This couple and their newborn made for perfect subjects, even the dog jumped in for a few shots. So it ended up being a great session and to top it all it was just a two minute drive around the corner back home again!

Big Dog

I believe this dog holds the record for the biggest I’ve ever had on a session! He was so well behaved though and made a great subject. Of course, so did these kids and their parents. This was a fun session and I think it comes through in these pictures. This first picture of the boy and the dog ended up being a lovely 14×11″ gallery wrap, it was great to see the product come back from the lab – so much character!

Hopefully those hot summer days are coming… The blog has been a bit neglected recently and when going through the backlog of sessions I came across this image which made me laugh and I can’t resist sharing it! The session was actually in the fall and I will share the rest of it later this year when it is more seasonal, I love how this area allows so many different moods with the changing seasons.

A little bit of everything

For this session headed over to a stable in the area to photograph a high school senior. We did a little bit of everything, some individual portraits, some portraits with sister and  of course with some with her horse. Lovely location and evening light and the girls were very natural for the camera. Actually the horse was too! As one of these portraits is a favorite of this young lady, I thought I’d include it here in the blog.

Fall portrait with dogs

Late last fall I did a shoot with the two boys in this family and their dog. It was one of my favorite sessions and they were some of the nicest boys I have ever met. Polite and very engaging. Their pet dog was a charmer too. This week they were back for another session along with Mom and Dad and the newest additional to the family, another rather adorable dog.  Four + Two = Another Lovely Session.

This girl was the star of the show yesterday. Her dog stole the final scene though! We got this shoot done just before the rain started. There are some lovely portraits to prepare for the gallery!
